Bajirao Mastani: A Review of the Epic Historical Romance
Bajirao Mastani is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who also co-produced it with Eros International and composed its soundtrack. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles, with Tanvi Azmi, Vaibhav Tatwawaadi, Milind Soman, Mahesh Manjrekar and Aditya Pancholi in supporting roles. Based on Nagnath S. Inamdar's Marathi novel Rau, the film narrates the story of the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I (1700â1740 AD) and his second wife, Mastani, a princess of Bundelkhand.
The film was conceived by Bhansali as early as the 1990s, but faced several delays due to its changing cast. The film was finally revived in 2014 after Bhansali decided on his lead actors from his previous films Mary Kom and RamLeela. The film required extensive research, elaborate sets, costumes and props to recreate the historical period and its opulence. The film was shot mostly on sets constructed in Film City, with some portions being filmed on location. The film also used visual effects and CGI to enhance some scenes.
Bajirao Mastani was released on 18 December 2015 and received critical acclaim for Bhansali's direction, various technical aspects, and the performances of the cast. The film also received several accolades, including 7 National Film Awards, 9 Filmfare Awards and 8 Zee Cine Awards. The film was also a commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
The film begins in 1720, when the court of Maratha Emperor Chhatrapati Shahu needs a new Peshwa, the equivalent of a prime minister. Bajirao, a young and brave warrior, is chosen for the position after he impresses Shahu with his skills and intelligence. Bajirao is married to Kashibai, a loving and loyal wife. Bajirao soon proves himself as a successful leader and expands the Maratha Empire through his conquests.
In 1728, Bajirao receives a letter from Mastani, the daughter of Raja Chhatrasal of Bundelkhand, who seeks his help against an invasion by the Mughals. Bajirao travels to Bundelkhand and defeats the Mughals with Mastani's assistance. He is impressed by her courage and beauty and gifts her his dagger as a sign of gratitude. Mastani considers this as a symbol of marriage and falls in love with Bajirao. She follows him to Pune, where she faces hostility from his family and society.
Bajirao is torn between his duty to his wife and his love for Mastani. He tries to balance both relationships but faces opposition from his mother Radhabai, his brother Chimaji and his friend Ambaji. He also faces political pressure from Nizam of Hyderabad, who plots against him with the help of Panth Pratinidhi, a Maratha nobleman. Bajirao's enemies try to assassinate him and Mastani several times but fail.
Bajirao builds a separate palace for Mastani called Mastani Mahal and declares her as his second wife. He also gives her the title of Maharashtrian Khatun. He has a son with her named Shamsher Bahadur. Kashibai accepts Mastani as Bajirao's wife but suffers from loneliness and jealousy. She also has a son with Bajirao named Balaji Baji Rao.
In 1740, Bajirao leaves for another military campaign against Nizam. He falls ill on the way and dies near Narmada River. Mastani is imprisoned by Radhabai in Pune and dies soon after hearing about Bajirao's death. Kashibai raises both her son and Mastani's son as her own children.
The film ends with a montage of Bajirao and Mastani's moments together and a voice-over by Kashibai saying that their love story is immortal. a474f39169
