When an application is made for registration of an assistance dog and the owner can show proof by certificate or other means that the dog is an assistance dog, the owner of the dog shall be exempt from any fee for the registration. Registration for an assistance dog shall be permanent and not subject to annual renewal so long as the dog is an assistance dog. (O.R.C. 955.011). Assistance dog tags can be obtained at the Lucas County Auditor's Office.
State law changed effective Dec. 1, 2013 allowing for the purchase of 1-year, 3-year or permanent dog tags. In Butler County, 1-year tags remain $14, 3-year tags are $42, and permanent tags are $140. All these dog tag options are available for purchase in the Auditor's Office or through our online site. Only 1-year tags may be purchased through our agents. The annual renewal period is Dec. 1-Jan. 31.
Purchasing a Duplicate TagIf your dog has lost its tag, duplicate tags are available for purchase from the Auditor's Office. Due to a change in state law, as of 5/22/2012 duplicate tags increased to $5 each. You can photocopy your original receipt, so that we have your tag number. Include $5 with that copy and send that along with a self addressed stamped envelope to the address above. Or you can come in and get one in person, it will only take a few minutes.

Any resident of this county may obtain a dog license by making oral or written application to the Treasurer, accompanied by the amount of the license tax and certificate of vaccination. The Treasurer shall have authority to license only dogs of owners or custodians who reside within the boundary limits of Mathews County and may require information to establish the location of the residence of the applicant. Upon receipt of proper application and certificate of vaccination, the Treasurer shall issue a license receipt on which he/she shall record the name and address of the owner or custodian, the amount of the license tax paid, the date of payment, the year for which issued, the serial number of the tag, and whether for a male, unsexed female, female or kennel and shall deliver the metal license tags or plates to the applicant forthwith.

The County of Shenandoah requires that all dogs four (4) months old or older be licensed. Owners who purchased a dog tag for the prior year will receive a renewal form the first of December of each year. If the rabies vaccination has expired, or no renewal form was received, the current vaccination certificate which has been signed by a veterinarian must be presented at the time of purchase. Dog tags are required to be purchased by January 31st.
